Renegade 101 Part 1
Often I am asked the ‘who, what and where’ of ‘Renegade Training’ along with my involvement and its endorsement from my company Right Coast Pro. I personally discovered Renegade Training as a means to recover from a serious automobile accident. As my recovery progressed, I soon found myself fascinated by the challenge, common sense and simplicity behind the principles of Renegade Training.
Once recovered and plunged back into the sporting world, I soon realized the immense benefits of Renegade Training in regards to injury prevention as well athletic performance and accepted the mantle of teaching others its benefits by investing in my education, becoming a Certified Renegade Trainer, Renegade Kettlebell Specialist, DMC™ Professional as well as rising through the ranks to become Sergeant of Arms for Renegade Training International.
Rather than babbling on about how Renegade Training’s beauty lies in its simplicity, remembering what has been forgotten (or misplaced due to commercial interests) and for lack of a better term functionality in a general overview, I decided the best route would be a series of articles written by its founder, Coach John Davies. Presented today is part one in Right Coast Pro’s Renegade 101 series.
Enjoy and as always do what is right! -JJ
"When proposed the idea of writing a “Renegade 101” series my initial reaction was in complete agreement with the idea and then after further review I realized the first major hurdle was where to begin. To on the surface readers, my company is primarily about exercise methodology and for that matter with humility, an unparalleled record of success that has my support team yearning for me to be public about. Yet to others “Renegade” is about the triumph of human spirit and will, with those not only celebrating my climb but the recognition that amongst the companies many lessons, it teaches, “adversity is something that is overcome”, bathed within honour. I suspect the best way to look at the starting ground of “Renegade” is to look back in time at its first initial foray into the public eye.
Nearly ten years ago a young up and coming web-site designer, Grant Hansen had contacted me about developing an online presence. With absolute honest, I had not considered the idea as I was prepared to retire from coaching and focus my business efforts in other areas. I had accomplished every goal I had in the training sector, coached teams that had won at every level, worked with legends of sport around the globe and effectively had nothing more to accomplish.
My dossier was outstanding but equally it came from a “different” time, before the internet of self-promotion, celebrity endorsements and other nonsense to get the easy sale. It was, or should I say “real” because when legends of sport are on your short list of clients, patrol Super Bowl sidelines and “in the know”, you simply don’t have to “market” your services to those who aren’t.
Eventually, Grant’s logic and perseverance paid off and we slowly embarked on the public presentation of “Renegade Training™”.
In making this decision, I decided to take the idea of how I shaped training in the sporting world and to do so in the mainstream. It was both an important decision I am glad to have made and equally one of the most naïve. The biggest problem, if you can call it that, the company faced was quite honestly self-imposed.
The internet explosion in the exercise and sport training sector at the start of the last decade brought along a strange group, those who knew little of developing athletes through the hand of experience but everything about marketing to the public. I simply was naïve, as I believed the mainstream would see through the comedic sales gimmicks and blunt plagiarism. There is a vast difference between being a “positive influence” and simply having your life’s work stolen and I learned a tough lesson of the latter.
That error in judgement proved to be only a temporary setback because in time substance shines through. While it has taken a decade, my resume stretches out throughout the globe in professional sport and exercise. Whether it through my overall level of intensity changing how people look at resistance training, methodologies in the use of complexes and mobility, imperfection and chaos training, general physical preparedness, sport specific work or even how my newest creation, DMC™, has swept through MMA and Football (“Soccer”) culture. I scan through online clips and I find my exercise choices and methods of delivery as the “hot new craze” and realize what a remarkable foundation we of Renegade, TEAM Renegade have made.
Before the sheer utterance of “arrogance” is noted about the list of accomplishments, please note I have learned in the last decade, if you do not spell it out succinctly, people do not put “it” together. I have coached coaches and developed training professionals throughout my career so when I look out over the vast horizon of sport, my list of athletes under “direction” stretches to every continent, virtually every team and every league. Look at the championships and trophy winners in sport after sport and in an alarmingly frequent occurrence, many are mentored through my programs and we are talking of hundreds of thousands each year, so please when you ask the "who", look at the upper ranks and realize where it began.
On any day, I can look out at practices grounds throughout Europe, Asia and South America and see my regimes being barked out in cadence in a number of languages just as I can throughout the training rooms of the NCAA.
I coach coaches and very proud of the influence I have made. If there is not a greater accomplishment in my career, it is the development of TEAM Renegade, a core of like-minded individuals who I am blessed with mentoring in their careers within the health and fitness industry and hopefully teaching them to chase their dreams and lead a new generation.
All that said is more than a bit uncomfortable for me to put down on paper because quite frankly, I am not used to spouting off about myself, feeling a need to but equally having to speak of one of my careers greatest blessings. I was not born with a silver spoon and in-fact, being alive to tell my story is a bit of a surprise. Having the chance to share my life’s work is a blessing, an honour that goes beyond simple words because I never could imagine that I would be in this position to do so. Coming from where I did in life, fighting for another gasp of life and for a punk that could never seem to get a break, all of “this” seems rather remarkable. So let me say, I trust that is a good opening for you, an understanding of where I am coming from. From here on, we can dispense with the heralding trumpets and fanfare as I have never down to well in those situations and quite honestly, this isn’t about me, it is about teaching you how adversity is something we overcome within a life of honour, commitment and loyalty.
When I started the company online, I pressed the notion that "this was about you" and while few seemed to understand the idea, it still is "all for you".
I spent my career in the shadows, a private consultant who does not need the ridiculous photo-op or the clever log-roll endorsement that permeates through the industry. I develop leaders of tomorrow, today and quite honestly, am not the type who needs to spend hours chit-chatting about himself, much less deceiving the market for a sale.
With that said and done, what I will promise you as we embark on Renegade 101, just I as I have told all that I have mentored, if you allow me I will improve your quality of life and impart on you the message that greatest lays within each of us. Each of us has the ability to rise to greatness, to clear a path for others and to truly better society.
There is no clever sales pitch, no hidden agenda, it is my solemn vow.
It is something that comes from remembering my heritage, representing it with honour, strengthened by its resolve and firm decision to leave mighty footprints for the future generations. Remember that succinctly my friends, this is who I am and this is what I am made of because along with honour, commitment and loyalty comes a man with pride. I am a man of pride, who values his career on the lives he has positively influenced, how I have honoured my families name and provided a legacy for those to come. On my breastplate is principles "never have a price-tag" and a sword that states "right is never wrong".
With this in-mind, I will sign-off in both my traditional way for those who have read me in the past and something long overdue here as I remain,
